Site Maintenance

We will be having site maintenance on May 10th, 2018 for much of the day at any time this site may be completely unresponsive. The upcoming changes are related to PHP7MySQLi compatibility, as well as some new features and a newer code base our Content Management System is completely in house, and changes between sites are generally synced yearly. Our Facebook Page and emails will be unaffected by this maintenance window.May 10th, 2018 UpdateIt looks like, after a minor unplanned UI redesign, the maintenance is about done. I've changed the site to use a subblock vs a second side bar, which allows more readability of content as its less cramped.I'll need to check the changes to individual systems updating code can occasionally introduce some bugs, but things appear to be working as they should at this point.

UBB.threads v7.6.1 Information

Isaac and I are working on finalizing UBB.threads v7.6.1, and should hopefully have the code out within the next couple of weeks. Quite a bit has been tackled in this update, you can take a look at the Official UBB.threads Announcements forum at UBBDev for a complete rundown, but I've cherry picked some items out of the progress reports Support for Google's reCAPTCHA Ability for admin's to disable mobile capability Identified and fixed a bug with the UBB.threads built in CAPTCHA New Styles Isaac really went out of the way to make some beautiful mobile friendly styles Lots of Control Panel work, again Updates to system libraries with the Smarty library update we may see an influx of modded forum bug reports, since it's a lot more strict about coding being in the templates The My Stuff and PM Indicator have been moved to the top right of the page where the username displays Image uploads to Galleries and Attachments are now compressed to allow users to upload large files and not kill mobile devices. The New Post indicator can now be customized via the style editor rather than using an image Posts in a thread will display an OP tag when the original poster replies. Users without an avatar will now have a square avatar with the first letter of their display name. A Return to Top chevron can now be clicked from the side of the page to return a user to the top of the page on long pages. Users can now change their ratings on topics. The Gallery has been updated and now has a clean display Active Topics now displays the full post, but uses CSS to hide elements after so many characters Fixes to user avatar display Fixed validation errors More mobile display fixes The cache manager now purges files in the tmp directory The Control Panel now displays the size that attachments are using, both via data in the database and as a count on the server. The current forum configuration is now backed up before changes are made Admin Log now records each time a user is checked in StopForumSpam from the UserEditor Admin Log now records each time a user is reported to StopForumSpam from the UserEditor Share to Facebook added Twitter sharing was cleaned up and includes the thread subject and URL Numerous HTTP HTTPS fixes Fix to a bug with the existing Facebook Like feature The AttachmentPoll Manager now opens within the current window, versus a popup File and Poll counts are now updated as they're added, versus returning to the parent section. Content rebuilder actions are now added to the admin log, along with stats and start times. More CDNProxyFirewall updates for fetching a correct IP address that may be hiding behind another host The top jumper and preview buttons now smoothly scroll vs jerking the page to the target Admins can now opt to minify their UBB.threads pages Admins can now print subscription pages from the Control PanelIf you haven't upgraded to the v7.6 series, we recommend you do so With security improvements, mobile capability, validity, and an updated interface it's like night and day from the v7.5 series.

Testimonial Submission Bug Fixed

We have fixed several bugs on our site management system today, one of which being a bug which would not allow users to Submit a Client Testimonial in our Client Testimonials system, which identified a potential error with all system notifications. The identified issue in this would only occur when there was no staff member accepting notifications a simple fix was to default that behavior to the site admin, versus just checking for members who have notifications turned on this will be pushed out to our various network sites momentarily.

UBB.threads Bounced EMail Processor

I, like many of you, have had my fair share of email bounces whereby your forum sends notices but you just get a not found error back from their former mail host. After years of dealing with these messages, we set out to find an option of dealing with these users, to stop bounce backs.UBB.threads can be set to disable sending mail to users, and with the help of some cleaver PHP coding we've devised a method of dealing with users Our UBB.threads Bounced EMail Processor script. This script will check your target email address preferably over an IMAP connection, limited testing has been done over a POP3 connection and will either generate a list, add users to a group, or just set their mail preferences to not allow communications.Best of all, we coded this script with the ability for you to set a crontask to automatically run on a schedule so you could setup Cron to automatically process the mailer bounces whenever you'd like we'd recommend weekly or monthly checks. We've packed the script with options IMAPPOP3 capable Generate a list or disable UBB.threads EMails Delete bounced messages after processing Process any number of failures per user you can set it to only process if there have been X amount of bounces for a specific address Only filter messages in a specific IMAP folder Assign bounced users to a group to easily manage them later Support for SSL connections to your mail serverAn upcoming build will also have support for logging all automated tasks to a file on your server.Order the UBB.threads Bounced EMail Processor today to process your bounced addresses today! We also offer services to adapt mail processing to any task, not just the UBB.threads system feel free to Contact Us today to discuss any services that we can offer your community!

UBB.threads Ad Targeting

We can provide coding and positioning services for your advertising needs an example of how this would look can be seen on the A Gardeners Forum Archive. If you see a blank AD Island it's because no additional ads could be served by Google Adsense based on the keywords on the page.noteWe positioned additional AD Island space which can all use the same Custom Island code, or could be updated to utilize different Custom Islands for various additional targeting on The Category Index displays the Custom Island Code after each category, for the first three categories. The Thread List displays the Custom Island Code after the Category List and after the Forum List. The Thread View page displays the Custom Island Code after the 1st, 3rd, and 5th post. These additional placement options allowed us to add an additional 7 Adsense blocks across the main pages of the forums with a maximum of 3 per page, as that's the maximum our account is allowed.Additional placement could also be made on other portions of the forum coding, such as the Active Topics page, Calendar, FAQ, etc. You can even hide the Custom Island integration and display just your ad while still being able to manage it through the Custom Island system.Best of all, these targeting changes being in the center column, are fully compatible with the UBB.threads v7.6.0 Mobile coding. If you would like to discuss possible options for your community, Contact Us today!

New UBB.threads Peeks

Gosh, it's been a while since I wrote an entirely new system for UBB.threads, heck it's been a busy year maintaining things that it's hard to compare any apples to oranges. As I lay here in bed swiping away at my tablet I think of many new additions to the forum software that I've been using all these years, and this year as part of a team of developers working to produce it as well.We had a long list of things that we wanted to tackle, one was the fact that we where far from standards compliant, and with a previous developer botching the transition to HTML5, and then allowing characters in urls that specifically weren't standards compliant, we had a lot of code cleanup. Then we started the push to redesign the administration panel. We then worked in support for proxies and cdn's to publish the actual user addresses, and for ipv6 users to have their addresses display and store properly.Stop Forum Spam saw some major work, as did our enhanced suhosin and max_vars checks. We worked in mobile support, and reworked it several times. We've even started work on some future systems, such as the ability to like and see who's liked users, posters, and topics.A substantial amount of work is going into future development, and we're working hard to ensure that those of you who have stood with the product see that it's worth the wait.

GD and ImageMagick only effect the Captcha and Gallery if you use neither of these then you don't really have to worry about what is right for you as you don't use either of them anywayMany users have asked what is better well, that's up to you to decide really though IM is more scalable and looks much cleaner hint Well, I'm going to go a level more and visit Operating System support with IM s GD.In Windows, to run IM you MUST open CMD.EXE access to your web server software, which can be a significant security issue so if you're using Windows as your web server software, I'd recommend you to use GD2.In Linux Unix I'd recommend you to use ImageMagick, items generated through IM look much cleaner than through GD.Another upside is that if your Web Host does not have support for either GD or IM, you can download a "binary" precompiled file from ImageMagick and just upload it to your server, chmod it 755, then link to it and it should work just asif your webhost installed it for you.One thing to keep in mind is that when you setup ImageMagick for your forums, you must define the path location on server to the ImageMagick files Convert and Mogrify. If you're in Windows you'd need to do double 's so it'd be CWINDOWSSystem32 assuming that's the location. In Linux you'd just enter the path such as usrbinconvert and usrbinmogrifyWhen you go to enter the paths for IM, you'll do so in the DB, Paths URLs section of the UBB Control Panel.

This is quite simple to do in Apache with your .htaccess file if you don't have a .htaccess file in your web root, you can add one.The following is what I use on my site to accomplish this Allow ReWritingRewriteEngine on Redirect nonwww URLs to WWWRewriteCond HTTP_HOST site.tldRewriteRule . httpwww.site.tld1 QSA,L,R301Simply replace "site.tld" with your domain on the two lines that it's mentioned, insert into your .htaccess file, and upload to your server.Due to the nonwww stance some users use, I'm also going to describe how to send all www requests to the nonwww domain Be sure that you're not using both of these as you could cause a lot of looping on your webserver. The instructions above are still valid, however, use this .htaccess block. Allow ReWritingRewriteEngine on Redirect WWW URLs to nonwwwRewriteCond HTTP_HOST www.site.tldRewriteRule . httpsite.tld1 QSA,L,R301

Errors and Solutions

This thread will take on various possible error messages and their solutions on a case basis.Database only viewable by forum administratorThis error generally is only shown to "non admin's", as the admin's should always see the full error hence the error message if for whatever reason you're getting this error and are an admin perhaps you're logged out there are a couple of options. If you have CP Access and Error Logging EnabledCP Tools Info Logs View SQL Errors TabSelect the log you would like to view, this will show you exactly what the logged errors with MySQL are, so that you can determine if you're having a server or script problem. If you don't have CP Access or Error Logging EnabledEdit the libsmysql.inc.php file, at about line you'll see IF YOU SET THE VARIABLE BELOW TO 1 IT WILL SHOW THE SQL ERRORS TO ALL USERS. USEFUL IF YOU CANNOT LOG IN AND NEED TO SEE THE SQL ERRORSshowerror 0Change this to IF YOU SET THE VARIABLE BELOW TO 1 IT WILL SHOW THE SQL ERRORS TO ALL USERS. USEFUL IF YOU CANNOT LOG IN AND NEED TO SEE THE SQL ERRORSshowerror 1And upload the file back to your server any error logs at this point will be in plain text and will not provide the DB Errors Admin Only message as above. We highly advise changing this back once your error is determined and fixed for securityconsistency sake.To enable MySQL Error Logging from within UBB.ThreadsThis is fairly easy to do, first you'll need to create a directory to house your logs, and you'll need to make it writable by your webserver chmodded 777 in nix environments. For this example, we'll assume that the FULL PATH to this directory is homeubbcentral.comlogging or chtdocsubbcentral.comloggingVisit the Logging page in your control panel CP Master Settings Primary Settings Logging Tab and insert the full path to the logging directory you have created, and tick the "Log MySQL Errors" checkbox be sure to "test" the directory to ensure it passes the check to ensure the webserver can write to it.Now, when an error is encountered, it will be written to an error log. What to do with errorsWell, this depends, if it's a UBB error, then you'll want to post it here as a support or bug thread. If it's a server error such as your server killing the connection to the mysql server, that's more an issue for your webhost.

There are several areas that you'll need to visit to setup attachments we'll cover them all here, including inline embedding of graphics. The ConfigurationFirst, you'll need to create a new directory on your server, and make it fully writable by the webserver chmod 777 in nix, we'll assume this is named "uploads" under your ubb install directory. forumsuploads.Secondly, you'll need to know the full filesystem path the "relative" path will not work here to this directory, it should be something similar tohomeubbcentral.compublic_htmlforumsuploadsorchtdocsubbcentral.compublic_htmlforumsuploadsNow, there are a few places you'll need to visit in the control panel, firstly, we'll want to set our "max inline image size" this setting will allow you to set how large of an image you'll want to display embedded in your forums when a user preforms an upload.Go toCP Display Options General Primary Tab Topic Display Options Max Size for inline uploaded imagesThe setting is in bytes, 1048576 bytes is one megabyte, however I would recommend not allowing images over say 50000 to be displayed inline keep in mind that in this age high speed internet lines are the norm, but there are still slower connections so it's good to be courteous and to keep in mind that most users will upload more than one graphic and numerous users may upload graphics as well. Now you'll want to set your general attachment settingsCP Master Settings Feature Settings Attachments Tab1. Attachment Storage Directory This is the directory we created in the first steps in this entry, this is a full server path to your uploads directory.2. Full URL to Attachment Storage Directory This is the URL webaddress to the directory we created in the first steps in this entry.3. Allowed Attachment File Extensions What filetypes do you want users to be able to upload Default .gif,.jpg,.txt,.zip,.png4. Maximum Attachment Size This is the max size you want users to be uploading, specified in bytes 1048576 bytes is one megabyte. This is a PER FILE setting. The UsageWhen creating a new thread or response, you'll see a "File Manager" link on the "Full Reply" or "New Post" page. When selecting this option you'll receive a popup which will allow you to attach files to your post.Steps1. Click "File Manager" to bring up the "Attachment" window.2. Click "Browse" to bring up the file browser window this will allow you to browse your computer for any files or images you wish to upload please note that you're bound by whatever the "allowed file type" setting is in the control panel.3. Click "open" on the file you wish to upload.4. Enter a description of what the file is if you want to.5. Click "add file" to add another file, or "done" to close the window and complete your posting. Please note that you must enter some text in both the "subject" and "post" fields when responding otherwise you will receive an error you cannot just respond with an attachment .

How do I backup my forums?

The recommended method is listed below this is not the only method but it's what tends to go the fastest especially with larger forums. We only recommend using the built in "backup database" tool as a last resort as it'll take forever to run on even a moderately small forum. Please Note MySQL File Creation times, Compression Times, Extraction Times, and Download Times will vary based on Server Resources, Database and Archive size, and Internet Connection Speed.MySQL Backup in Unix or LinuxIf you're on a LinuxUnix machine, you can use the Command Line tools via SSH to create a database dump backup of the mysql database by inserting the commandmysqldump uusername ppassword databasename databasename.sqlIf you wish to compress the above output so that it's easier to transfer around, then you can dotar cvpzf databasename.tgz databasename.sqlIf you've compressed the output and would like to decompress it, then you can runtar xzvf databasename.tgzthe output will extract as databasenamedatabasename.sqlAnd to restore said backup, after you purge data out of the MySQL databasemysql h localhost uusername ppassword databasename databasename.sqlFile Backup in Linux or UnixYou can easily backup your entire UBB.Threads directory with or without the cache with a quick one linerWithout the Cachetar cvpzf forum_backup.tgz pathtoyourforum excludefrompathtoyourforumcacheWith the Cachetar cvpzf forum_backup.tgz pathtoyourforumExtracting the Backuptar xzvf forum_backup.tgzPHPMyAdmin NoticeI myself don't recommend that you create your database backup from within PHPMyAdmin or any other web script as it can take much longer than the aforementioned methods as you're hopping through the webserver to do something that it doesn't really need to be doing.Another issue with using PHP scripts to create a database dump is that you could end up hitting the "PHP Maximum Execution Time" limit which is usually about 60 seconds If this is the case, the archive you're presented with will generally not be complete and you'll end up with missing records. This is generally not a problem with databases under 100mb or so but is still something one would have to worry about.

One of which is the "Uploaded Avatars" optionsAvatar Upload Storage Directory This is the directory on the server full server path to where you're allowing these images to be uploaded such as homeyoursite.tldpublic_htmlforumuploadsFull URL to Avatar Upload Storage Directory This is the full "web url" to the aforementioned upload directory such as httpwww.yoursite.tldforumuploadsMaximum file size of uploaded avatars This is the max amount in bytes that you wish for users to be able to upload. Please note that you generally don't want this to be too large I personally would recommend nothing larger than 25k50k 2560051200 bytes for a measly avatar. There are also "max size" definitions, which allow you to set a maximum size of the images. From a user side, they'll need to visit "My Stuff My Profile" and then at the bottom of the page they'll see the Avatar's section, from here they'll have several options based on what you enabled above they'll be able to drop a URL in for a remote avatar, select a stock avatar from your server, upload a new one, or use no avatar at all.

One quick and easy trick in Apache to block users from leaching your images or other files from your web space is with mod_rewrite the rule I'm going to share with you today will block image leachers and file leachers from raiding your bandwidth. Each site you wish to add will have its own line, and will be prefixed by "RewriteCond HTTP_REFERER !"Blocking Image Hotlinkers .htaccess entry Start UGN Specific Hosts RewriteCond HTTP_REFERER !38.99.95.240 NCRewriteCond HTTP_REFERER !38.99.95.222 NCRewriteCond HTTP_REFERER !undergroundnews.com NCRewriteCond HTTP_REFERER !undergroundnews.net NCRewriteCond HTTP_REFERER !undergroundnews.org NC Start Affiliate Hosts RewriteCond HTTP_REFERER !ubbdev.com NCRewriteCond HTTP_REFERER !ubbcentral.com NC Start Search Engine Hosts RewriteCond HTTP_REFERER !google.com NCRewriteCond HTTP_REFERER !yahoo.com NCRewriteCond HTTP_REFERER !picsearch.com NCRewriteCond HTTP_REFERER !httpaolsearch.aol.com NC Start defined files redirect location RewriteRule .jpegjpggifbmppngJPEGJPGGIFBMPPNG FThis will block all users linking to the file types ".gif", ".jpg", ".jpeg", ".psd", ".png" they will receive a red X when trying to link to your graphics. You can forward them to another graphic of your choosing as well by replacing the image rule at the bottom of the above example withRewriteRule .jpegjpggifbmppngJPEGJPGGIFBMPPNG httpwww.yoursite.tldnofreelinking.gif FYou can use the above rules to also block hotlinking to files by usingRewriteRule .execomswfflamp3movwmvrmramwmaziptxtbattarrargztgz FAnd you can additionally use it to block BOTH files and graphics withRewriteRule .execomswfflamp3movwmvrmramwmaziptxtbattarrargztgzgifjpgjpegpsdpng FThe hosts section has separate sections for your site hosts for sites with more than one domain, affiliate hosts so you can allow your affiliates to grab your content, and for search engines so Google images can grab copies of your files to show in an image search.

Well, there are several options if you're in the boat that you want to block Search Engines from crawling your forums all together.A good "first step" is to disable SE Friendly URLs, myself I don't like doing this, it's much easier on the eyes and the urls look ugly. Please note however that this will NOT block search engines, it'll simply make it more difficult for them to crawl your content so it's not an endall beall suggestion. If the Search Engine respects robots.txt standards, it's even easier most nonabusive search engines support this, just edit or add your robots.txt file in your web root and add the followingUseragent Disallow forumBe sure however to update forum with whatever your forum's location is from your domain's web root so if your forum is in httpwww.ubbcentral.comforums you'd enter "forums" no trailing slash.

You may be posting from a site which is not in your allowed sites list multiple domains, viewing from a nonwww variant of your forum, etc you can check this through CP Master Settings Primary Settings General Tab Advanced Options Dropdown Domains for HTTP Referrer Check5. Typically major revisions 7.1 to 7.2, 7.2 to 7.3, etc have a beta period typically minor revisions 7.1 to 7.1.1, etc are minor bug reports and don't require a beta period.Typically the testing period of a beta is as follows1. Received by the Private Beta Group and tested for several weeks until bugs can be ironed out.2. Pushed here at UBBCentral for user testing for several weeks until any bugs can be ironed out typically a week or so with no bugs will be classified as successful.3. Provided that no bugs have been located, the public will either see a public beta if items need to be tested, or will receive the tested revision as a final.

When importing from UBB.Classic UBB.Threads you'll likely notice that a lot of Private Messages that you've deleted in the past have "magically" appeared out of "nowhere" There is a very logical reason behind this behavior. When you send a Private Message in UBB.Classic UBB.Threads, there are two participants, when one participant deletes the topic, it still remains for the other. When creating the importer for UBB.Classic UBB.Threads a decision had to be made based on the best logical way to import data, especially since some users would not certain PM's in their inbox because they removed them, and the logic of how to do so in a server friendly manner was near impossible, so it came down to either import everything that is current in the PM system, or import nothing. Not all PM's will reappear, only those which exist in the inbox of either or both participants, and both participants regardless of if they deleted the PM or not will receive the message back in their inbox.

ShortURLs don't function properly.

There can be a some issues with ShortURLs on some webhosts basically it requires that the "AcceptPathInfo" directive in Apache2 to be enabled, which isn't on some webhosts. On some webhosts, they allow you the ability to make small configuration changes to your webspace through a .HTAccess file. Changes made in the ".HTAccess" file have a permission set for each option specified, you can generally find information on them through the Apache2 manual the one we'll be working with is listed above AcceptPathInfo. On the directive page, theres a section mentioning "Override" for each directive, which in this case is FileInfo. Your webhost will have to make an update to your site add add either the line "AcceptPathInfo On" or "AllowOverride FileInfo". The first will turn it on globally for your site as it should be or they can choose to allow you to enable it where you want to with the later. Please note that, in some cases, they will already allow you to make changes to the .htaccess file, so it'd be good to test it if it isn't enabled, it just will fail to work, as it already does.If they choose the later, then you can make the update in your .htaccess file by adding this line AcceptPathInfo On
