Hash Calculator · About
What does this tool do?
The Hash Calculator will allow you to convert a string, word, phrase, acronym, etc. to an MD5, SHA1, or Crypt Hash.
What is MD5?
MD5 (Message-Digest Algorithm 5) is a widely-used cryptographic hash function with a 128-bit hash value. MD5 was designed by Ronald Rivest in 1991 to replace an earlier hash function, MD4. As an Internet standard, MD5 has been employed in a wide variety of security applications, and is also commonly used to check the integrity of files.
What is SHA1?
SHA-1 (Secure Hash Algorithm 1) is a cryptographic hash function designed by the United States National Security Agency and is a U.S. Federal Information Processing Standard published by the United States NIST. SHA-1 produces a 160-bit (20-byte) hash value known as a message digest. A SHA-1 hash value is typically rendered as a hexadecimal number, 40 digits long.
What is crypt?
Crypt will return a hashed string using the standard Unix DES-based algorithm or alternative algorithms that may be available on the system.
What is password_hash
Password_hash creates a new password hash using a strong one-way hashing algorithm. password_hash is compatible with crypt. Therefore, password hashes created by crypt can be used with password_hash.
What is a salt?
A salt is an optional string to base hashes on. Both crypt and password_hash require a 22 character hash, if supplied.
Are any characters filtered?
The Hash Calculator allows plain text characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9) and minimal special characters (. ! , - _ and SPACE).
